Diyas are symbolically lit during prayers, rituals, and ceremonies, and are permanent fixtures in many homes and temples. The warm, bright glow emitted from a diya is considered auspicious, regarded to represent enlightenment, prosperity, knowledge and wisdom.
Diyas have a symbolic significance to our heritage. The lighting of a diya represents the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance. And so it spreads positivity wherever it is lit.
Diyas are generally placed at the entrance of homes because they act as guiding lights bringing prosperity and success into our lives.
South India is home to innumerable types of diya lamps, from hanging diya lamps, to small vastu lamps and large multi-tiered floor lamps and boat lamps among many other examples.
A number of diya lamps are adorned with animal finials and a turtle (Kurma) base that serve to embelish these exquisite brass lamps. Kerala temple lamps were called Ammaivitaku, and the turtle at the base symbolized the primodal support of the universe of the luminaries. Finials on diya lamps come in many forms, and include lions, peacocks and other birds and animals.
The artisanal workmanship of diya lamps from days gone by was nothing less than exquisite, which makes these items even more important to our heritage and to posterity.
