Details

Cow masks focus on the Brahmin sacred cow and originate in Kerala. These masks represent living culture, and were created for religious and ceremonial purposes, as well as for beatification.

Carved from wood, these cow masks were painted before a layer of polychrome was applied as a finishing touch.. More ornamental  cow masks had eye lashes, along with ornamentation on the horns.

Nandi bull heads were used extensively at the Polo festival in Kerala. The bull was used to plough the fields and do other heavy work. These hand-crafted pieces were a way to pray for their health and longevity.
